InLinguistic Variation and Change, Xu (2006) makes a comprehensive and accessibleintroduction to the research achievements about language variation and change in theinternational linguistic circles. Xu (2006:91) states that a variation study, whose key task is ascientific explanation on linguistic heterogeneity, is actually a research about linguisticstructures. That is to say, language variation study involves analyzing the interaction oflanguage, culture and society，the more specific study of variation is concerned with theimpact of this interaction on the structures and processes of contemporary or historicalsources. This thesis attempts to conduct a multi-dimensional investigation into Englishvariation in Chinese cultural context from a sociolinguistic perspective.

1.1 Research Background
Given the rapid growth in international contacts worldwide, English is increasinglybecoming an international language and the chosen medium to facilitate effectivecommunication among people of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
