摘要:The present study aims at exploring the overall use of English PLS employed bycollege students in the English education program, and the correlation between EnglishPLS and English pronunciation achievement, and also the differences in PLS use betweenstudents of different pronunciation levels.

CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION


The Importance of English Pronunciation Learning
Pronunciation is the indispensable and fundamental element of language. Itsimportance can be revealed in what Gimson (1989) stated一“to speak any language aperson must know nearly 100% of its phonetics,while only 50-90% of its grammar and1% of the vocabulary may be sufficient". Any language is firstly spoken and then written.When people leam their mother tongue, they also have to follow this rule. They first leamthe spoken form of the language, and then the written form.Pronunciation is also the foundation of second and foreign language learning. First,good pronunciation can improve intelligibility. Only with correct pronunciation can aperson easily understand the exact verbal information conveyed by others and conveyexact verbal information to others. Second, correct pronunciation can also help learnersleam new words. With a good understanding of phonetic knowledge and pronunciationrules,vocabulary memorization can be more effective. Third, pronunciation knowledgecan help learners leam grammar and improve reading and writing. In English, a lot ofgrammar is connected with pronunciation. What's more, English is an intonationlanguage,since many writers make great effort to increase the intonation beauty of theirwork,good pronunciation can help learners enjoy literature work better and thus improvewriting unconsciously.

The Significance of the Study
As mentioned above, English pronunciation learning is very important, especially forcollege students in the English education program. However, the current situation is thatthe significance of English pronunciation has long been neglected by many students andteachers,and pronunciation teaching methods are relatively simple,and teaching contentsare unbalanced. Moreover, researches on English pronunciation mainly focus on teachingmethods, while few researches focus on learning strategies.However, according to Yang (2007),many English teachers discovered that poorlearner autonomy and lack of good learning habits and methods are the major obstacleson the way of enhancing students' English learning ability and English level.Oxford (1990) argues that strategies are important for two reasons. In the first place,strategies are tools for active, self-directed involvement, which is essential for developingcommunicative competence. Secondly,appropriate use of LLS result in improvedproficiency and greater self-confidence.The truth is that college students in the English education program have their owncharacteristics and problems. On one hand,they have problems such as weak foundation,lack of initiative or good learning habits. On the other hand,their fixture profession placesa high standard on their English level, particularly pronunciation.

An Overview of Researches on LLS
The PLS field is the domain that links LLS to pronunciation learning. In anotherword,PLS is the application of LLS to pronunciation learning. So before the review ofthe studies on PLS,it is necessary to look at the previous researches on LLS,whichprovides the theoretical foundation for the studies of PLS.The study of LLS began in the mid 1970s.
