Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
The Passive voice is a common but also complex language phenomena in both Chineseand English. Over a long period, both linguists and grammarians have shown intensiveinterest in it. From various perspectives, they have given it a variety of explanations for itsfeatures, constraints, usages and classifications. However, in terms of its definition, it hasalways been very controversial. In order to better illustrate it, several influential definitionsare given here by some famous linguists and grammarians both home and abroad about"voice" and "passive" in these two languages: These definitions seem to be quite dazzling, differing from each other with diversefocuses, some on form, some on meaning and some on sentences. One thing should be notedhere is that passive voice is a grammatical term in English. While in Chinese, we do not havethe so-called "passive voice (bei dong yu tai)" as English in real sense. Thus, Chinesesentence containing passive meaning would be better called passive construction or structures.In previous review, passive construction is widely studied in different scopes andperspectives. The previous research mainly focuses on some aspects of Chinese and Englishpassive constructions, such as syntactic forms, semantic features, pragmatic features,discourse functions and cognitive features. Their findings do facilitate our learning of Chineseand English passive constructions by knowing their similarity and differences. However, theyalso have their limitations. A majority of previous study simply compare Chinese passives andEnglish passives from several angles,they seldom mention Chinese learners' acquisition ofEnglish passives and they never discuss the problems that Chinese learners may probablyencounter in using English passives. Thus, they fail to provide adequate pedagogicalimplications based on their major findings.The previous achievements shed light for thepresent study and their limitations make it necessary to further study in this area.

1.2 Objective and Significance of the Study
In this paper, the writer uses Integrated Contrastive Model, a combined CA and CIAapproach to analyze English and Chinese passives, especially to facilitate the research ofChinese learners’ acquisition of English Passives. Based on some findings got by preciousresearchers, the writer compares English and Chinese passive sentences to explore theirsimilarities and differences. The writer tries to formulate some predictions aboutinterlanguage concerning the problems that Chinese learners of English may probablyencounter with these differences. Then the author uses the data from ContrastiveInterlanguage Analysis to examine those hypothesis from CA, either prove them or upsetthem, to investigate the relationship between English passive sentences in learner languageand the native language. Later, the author provides some explanations for the features of thelearner corpus and offers pedagogical implications for both language learners and teachers.This thesis has great significance. Firstly, it helps English learners have a goodknowledge of the differences between English passives and Chinese passives so as tofacilitate Chinese learners' command of English passive sentence.
