4.1 Contrastive Analysis
In Integrated Contrastive Model, CA (Contrastive Analysis) is composed of two parts:one is the contrast between two OLs (Original languages) and the other part is the contrastbetween SL and TL (one source language and its translation in another language). These twoforms of contrastive analysis are quite complementary to each other. The demerit of not beingable to guarantee text type comparability in OL vs. OL gets compensated by the advantage ofSL vs. TL since the later type provide “a unique opportunity of showing how the samemeaning is conveyed in different languages”(Johansson & Hofland, 1994: 26). But translatedtext are regarded as “distorted version of‘real’texts” by Baker in 1993; in turn, the weakpoint in translated text is then balanced by the authenticity of the data in OL vs. OL (Granger,1996). In this chapter, we will firstly generalize some basic similarities both English andChinese passives share, and then we will mainly focus on the differences. While makingcomparisons, it is narrow-sighted to compare only at the syntactic level. Instead, we willmake contrastive analysis concerning overall frequency, long passives, syntactic functions,pragmatic features and semantic properties between English and Chinese passives. All theexamples cited include Chinese vs.English and Chinese vs. Translated version in English andare used as evidence to support certain relevant arguments. Based on the above differences,we will come up with some predictions, i.e. the problems that Chinese EFL learners mayprobably encounter while acquiring English passives.

Conclusion
