Chapter I Introduction

1.1 Source of the Project

The  novel  The  Magic  Misfits,  a  New  York  Times  bestseller,  is  a  book  written  by Neil  Patrick  Harris.  As  the  author  of  this  book  is  also  an  actor,  singer,  comedian, producer, and part-time magician, the style of the text is different from other serious novels but full of happiness despite difficulties of life. 

The  book  depicts  the  adventure  of  an  orphan  magician  Carter  with  his  friends during the trip. They have overcome many difficulties, using their talents and magic tricks to defeat the greedy Bosso and his crew. There are also some introductions of magic tricks shown in the book. 

As  a  novel  for  kids,  this  book  contains  witty  statements  and  simple  expressions, while most of the language used in this book is colloquial and easy to understand. 

1.2 Significance of the Project

Children  need  to  read  the  best  literature  other  countries  have  to  offer.  We  must meet this challenge by respecting and providing the best in translations or they will be cheated out of part of their global heritage (International Companion Encyclopedia of Children’s Literature, Peter Hunt, Dec. 2004). 

 Because  children’s  literature  is  characterized  by  a  dual  audience  (of  adults  as well as children), translators’ choices are inevitably colored by their desire to cater to adult views on childhood, and by an adult understanding of what it means to write for children  (Children's  Literature  in  Translation:  Challenges  and  Strategies,  Joseph Farrell, 2007). That makes the choices important that need translation theory to guide. However, Research focusing on foreign translation theory may not fit the condition of translation  in  Chinese.  In  this  project,  the  research  of  theory  'Faithfulness, Expressiveness,  Elegance'  used  to  guide  translation  might  be  very  important  while the target language is Chinese.
