摘要:By doing this, students' word spelling ability could be improved, and thuseffectively help those unsuccessful English learners who have trouble in word studying.What's more, it puts forward some good advice for China's policy makers about curriculumand English teaching, as well as English learning for EFL learners.
Chapter Two Literature review
A brief introduction has been given in the first chapter. According to the structure ofthe thesis, this chapter will review the related literature of phonological awareness andword spelling in detail.
2.1 The definition of PA
PA (Phonological Awareness) is a widely used concept in western Psychology and alarge number of linguists are studying on it. PA was put forward first by Bruce (1964).Since then, PA has been a hot topic of psycholinguistics and it has been investigated moredeeply and more systematically. Researchers argue intensely about the meaning of the termand about the nature of the tasks used to measure it. The reason why researchers are sointerested in studying PA is that it is closely connected with people's reading and spellingabilities. However, there are different views on the definition of PA. The main ideas are asfollows:Phonological awareness is the ability to response to and to control the phonemesegments (Shankweiler 1986). Here PA is considered to be a kind of matalinguistic ability.Most people hold this view, and also it is a more acceptable point of view. Shankweiler &Crain believe that the external awareness of the phonemic structure depends on thematalinguistic capacity which does not form at the same time with language ability. Forexample, 4-5 years old children have already had normal language presentation ability.However, they still haven't had the capacity to manipulate their language. Generallyspeaking, the natural speech act always comes up automatically. On the contrary,metalanguage act requires active controlled of language processing. Nevertheless, a maturelanguage speaker is often not aware of the single phoneme, unless he/she activates thecontrolled language processing system.
