In recent years, in economic growth speed of South Korea has slowed down, but its GDP has kept increasing by on average 8.6% every year for thirty years. After more than 40 years' efforts, South Korea has leaped from an extremely poor agricultural country to a rising advanced industrial country with GDP ranking 11th and total volume of foreign trade ranking 12th in the world, owning advanced shipbuilding technology, motor vehicle industry, chemical engineering, electronics, communication industry and network infrastructure. In 1996, South Korea joined the OECD and became the 29th member of the organization. In 2004, it proposed that the average per capita income would reach 20,000 U.S. dollars in 2010. According to the statistics of South Korea, in 1962, the GDP and average per capita income in South Korea were just 2.3 billion dollars and 87 dollars respectively, but till 2004, they were up to 680.1 billion dollars and 14,162 dollars correspondingly. In 2007, the growth rate of GDP was 4.9% and the average national income per capita was over 20,000 dollars. The foreign trade volume has also increased from 0.096 billion dollars in 1962 to 857.28 billion dollars in 2008. In 2009, the South Korean economy increased by 0.2%. The volume of exports and imports totaled 686.61 billion dollars, among which the amount of exports was 363.53 billion dollars, dropped by 13.9% compared with that of the same period in the former year and the amount of imports was 323.08 billion dollars, down by 25.8%. Nowadays, for the sake of international financial crisis, South Korean economy is faced with severe challenges including the volatile financial market and drastic fluctuation in the stock and foreign currency markets etc. Furthermore, the real economy is trapped in troubles of wholly depressed exports, investment and consumption and rapidly decreasing consumption of such hot spots like automobiles and real estate etc.
