Chapter OneIntroduction
1.1 Research background
As a new linguistic research method,Chinese researchers pay more attention tosemantic prosody.According to research objects,researchers are always taking verbsand adverbs as the main point.For the particularity and extensiveness of verbs andadverbs,they are often used as research subjects in English vocabulary teaching.
Because Chinese students often have misuse of causative verbs,one of the highfrequency verbs in Chinese students’English writing,it is of great significance to studyit.However,the traditional word teaching method only focuses on grammar,phoneticsymbols and word collocation,fails to make students deeply understand the meaning ofwords and then ignore the relationship between words and discourse.For a long time inthe past,Chinese English learners faced the situation of the choice of words.The wrongchoice of words and not familiar with synonyms replacement,makes students becomerigid and stubborn.Therefore,on the one hand,the means of semantic prosody studycan find out the grammatical errors and word errors of Chinese students in Englishwriting.On the other hand,a comparison of Chinese students’composition corpus withEnglish native students’composition corpus will offer English teachers teachingexperience and a large number of scientific,objective and reasonable examples.
What the researchers need to do first is to take the word as the research point,fromits colligation,collocation,node words to find the semantic prosody tendency.If thisidea is to be realized,the choice of research tools is important.First of all,for theselection of corpus,the composition level of English learners in our country is fromshallow to deep and then maintains on a average level line.So we have to consider thewhole situation of the study section,while the composition choice of native Englishspeakers can not be too different from the level of Chinese learners.
1.2 Research purpose
Few points in this research will be mentioned.First,explore the differences invocabulary selection of Chinese English learners and native English speakers.Second,explore the differences in frequency,collocation behaviour and semantic prosodybetween Chinese learners and native English speakers.Taking Professor Wei Naixing’sclassification theory of semantic prosody as a theoretical foundation,this research willexplore the words collocation in English writing of Chinese learners.
Previous studies have found that some node words always habitually presented akind of collocation words with the same or similar semantic characteristics.It meansthat semantic prosody is produced by the semantic features of the node words and thecollocation words.In a sense,the discovery of semantic prosody is one of the mostvaluable and important achievements of corpus linguistics in the past 20 years.With thedevelopment of corpus linguistics,semantic prosody has become an important researchobject of contemporary corpus linguistics.Stewarts’work(2010),Semantic Prosody:ACritical Evaluation,the first monograph on the study of semantic prosody,marked thatthe study of semantic prosody has entered a new stage.
