The enthusiasm of foreigners to learn Chinese continues to rise in recent years alongwith China’s political and economic development and the enhancement of itscomprehensive national strength.The demand for learner’s dictionaries specificallydesigned for foreigners to learn Chinese has also correspondingly increased.However,most CFL learner’s dictionaries are basically the abridged version of XinhuaDictionary or Contemporary Chinese Dictionary,thus,their compilation fails toconsider CFL learners’needs in terms of the selection of entries,definition andexamples(Lu Jianming 2007).It is found that only 6.8%foreign students choselearner’s dictionaries compiled by Chinese lexicographers,and at the same time,40.18%foreign students were unaware of these CFL learner’s dictionaries(ZhangYihua 2011).Therefore,how to improve the quality of foreign-oriented learner’sdictionaries and make them work better in assisting CFL learners is a very urgentissue.

Plants are closely related with humans’life.Initially,many plants existed only asfood for humans’survival needs.Along with close contact with plants,people havegained a deeper understanding of their living environment,characteristics,functions,etc.,and this understanding is gradually reflected in the language people use.

1.2 Research Objective and Questions

The research objective of this thesis is to improve the presentation of plant definitionsin CFL learner’s dictionaries in order to help CFL learners acquire plant nouns better.

The following research questions will be addressed to achieve theabove-mentioned objective:

2.1 Studies on Definitions

Definitions of words,the soul of a dictionary,reflect the quality of the dictionary andare also the most difficult and academic parts in dictionary compilation.There are richresearch achievements in definitions from various perspectives.The following is areview from two aspects.

2.1.1 Theories of Definition

The research achievements of definition theories include those of dictionarycompilation,methods and strategies adopted in defining,as well as definition ofpolysemy.
