imacy conditions in the priming stage or whether ORC priming under three animacy conditions have syntactic priming effect, all the target sentences output and other types of sentences’ (non-target sentences) output produced by subjects in the priming stage were counted. A total of 1500 items were produced and 500 items for each animacy condition (e.g., inanimate-animate: 500; animate-inanimate: 500; animate-animate: 500). There are no missing or unresponsive items. In all the 1500 sentences, 891 target sentences were produced and among which the number of inanimate-animate ORC is 384 sentences, the number of animate-inanimate ORC is 131 sentences and the number of animate-animate ORC is 376 sentences. Besides, there were 609 other types of sentences (non-target sentences) produced, among which 116 sentences are under inanimate-animate condition, 369 sentences are under animate-inanimate condition and 124 sentences belong to animate-animate condition. According to the above figures, the percentage of target sentence output (ORC) and non-target sentence output under three animacy conditions were counted, so as to find out whether syntactic priming can facilitate the output of target sentences (ORC) or whether ORC priming under three animacy conditions have syntactic priming effect. The specific results are shown in Figure 5.1.

Chapter Six Conclusion

6.1 Major Findings

This thesis mainly discusses three research questions related to the syntactic priming of ORC. First of all, does syntactic priming facilitate the production of ORC under different animacy conditions? If so, is it sustainable? Secondly, how does language proficiency affect ORC priming under different animacy conditions?Finally, How does animacy condition affect ORC priming?And how do animacy condition and language proficiency interactively affect the priming of ORC? Based on the above research questions, this thesis adopted a 2×3 two-factors mixed experimental design and selected 25 second-year graduate students and 25 second-year undergraduate students of English major, respectively, to complete a 3-week experiment. After the experiment was finished, all the relevant data were analyzed and the research results were concluded in detail. The major findings of this thesis are as follows: 

Firstly, it is found that syntactic priming indeed facilitates the production of ORC, but only in the condition of inanimate-animate and animate-animate. Syntactic priming does not facilitate the production of ORC under animate-inanimate condition. Moreover, the facilitation effect or the syntactic priming effect of ORC under inanimate-animate and animate-animate is not sustainable. This effect disappeared quickly and subject’s ORC output almost returned to the baseline level after a week. Therefore, it is believed that syntactic priming can affect the output of ORC, but its priming effect is regulated by both syntactic factors and semantic factors. And the priming of ORC supports residential activation account, which means the priming of ORC is a short-time mechanism. 

Secondly, it is found that there is no significant difference in the priming of ORC under three different animacy conditions between subjects with higher language proficiency and lower language proficiency.
