Chapter One Theoretical Foundation

1.1 The Emergence and Development of New Historicism

The emergence of any theory is based on the absorption and innovation of previous theories and is grounded, never appearing out of thin air, and the same is true of neo-historicism. New historicism is theoretically influenced by post-structuralism and Michel Foucault‟s theory of power discourse.

英语语言学论文怎么写

As an important branch of post-structuralism, the theoretical formation of neo-historicism has been influenced to some extent by Post-structuralism theories. New Historicism, as a new practice of literary criticism, differs from both traditional literary criticism. As a new practice of literary criticism, it is different from traditional literary criticism, which opposes the so-called “old historicist” scholarship, as well as from formalism and post-structuralism. It advocates the reconstruction of historical and cultural contexts, emphasizing the dynamic connection between history and text “as a metaphor for the interrelationship of cultural texts” (Zhang Jinyuan, 1993: 2). French deconstructionist scholars, represented by Derrida, and advocated a critique of Western Logocentrism. Logocentrism holds that there is a natural, intrinsic and direct relationship between speech and meaning (i.e., truth, the word of God). Words are the “natural outpouring” of the speaker‟s thoughts, the transparent symbol of what he or she is “thinking at the moment”. Speech is the first, and the written word is the second, a substitute for sound, the medium of the medium, hence the name “Phonocentrism”. In response to this bias, Derrida proposes a positive and effective method of subversive deconstruction, claiming that written words are not necessarily inherently inferior to “present” speech. At the same time, Derrida also strongly opposes the traditional “dichotomy” and tries to deconstruct the hierarchy between speech and word, man and woman, center and edge, reason and madness, subject and other, advocating the idea and concept of dissolving the center, highlighting the edge, and subverting the hierarchical order. New historicism draws nourishment from the subversive principle of deconstruction theory, attempts to subvert the traditional hierarchical relationship between historical text and literary text, historical discourse and literary discourse, big history and small history, history and reality, etc., elevates the originally marginal “small history” to a prominent position, deconstructs traditional historicism and literary views, and opens up the channel between history and literature. On the whole, New Historicism is a kind of subversion and deconstruction of traditional historical studies, literary studies, historical concepts, and literary views, and Deconstructivism is the foundation of the existence of New Historicism.

1.2 The Major Representatives and Main Ideas

New historicism theorists have sought to recover the historical dimension in literary criticism and have continued to put it into practice. These scholars include: Stephen Greenblatt, Louis Montrose, Hayden White, Jonathan Dollimore, Robert Weimann, Patricia Parker, and so on.
