CHAPTER THREEDECOLONIZING WESTERN EUROCENTRIC LEGACY ANDKNOWLEDGE

3.1 Decolonial Epistemology in Borderlands/La Frontera on History

When the author of this thesis talks about decolonial epistemology, she refers tothe essential knowledge that comes from sources not taken into consideration, discriminated, racialized, ignored, erased, or made inferior by the hegemony of westernEuropean knowledge. This systematical racialization of knowledge (for decolonialthinkers) occurs; “As a consequence of a process of racialization that occurs throughthe marking of bodies… Some bodies are racialized as superior, and other bodies areracialized as inferior” (Grosfoguel 12).

Decolonial thinkers problematize the supremacy of a single knowledge withpretensions of universality before the multiplicity of knowledge (epistemologicalpluralism). The decolonial epistemology created by the oppressed or victims ofcolonization is also called “Southern Epistemology” (Santos 201).

Borderlands/La Frontera questioned since its first chapter the official USAEurocentric history, in which it is repeatedly said that the Spaniards discovered andcolonized America, Anzaldua’s choice to narrate this historical event is the verbalizedform of the word “invasion.” She writes: “At the beginning of the 16th century, theSpaniards and Hernan Cortes invaded Mexico” (5). On the same page, she talks aboutthe genocide giving numbers; “Before the Conquest, there were twenty-five millionIndian people in Mexico and the Yucatan. Immediately after the Conquest, the Indianpopulation had been reduced to under seven million. By 1650 only one-and a-half-million pure-blooded Indians remained” (5).

CONCLUSION

As the author mentioned earlier, the main goal of the thesis is to demonstrate thatbeyond the literary work, Borderlands/La Frontera is an ethical and theoreticalframework of liberation. This paper have been able to paint Gloria Anzaldua as a socialscientist who, through her personal experience of oppression, develops decolonialepistemology to explain to us systemic social phenomena or colonial and neocolonialinstitutions such as racism, capitalism, sexism, and patriarchy.

This thesis manages to demonstrate after an extended analysis of the workBorderlands/La Frontera the existence of Chicana Decolonial epistemology, which isextremely important in the construction of the Decolonial Latin American identity thatcannot be conceived without a good understanding of Mexicans living in theborderlands.

Through Anzaldua’s decolonial framework on the origin of Chicanos and adecolonial critical historical analysis, the thesis demonstrates how the Anglo Saxon USAmericans have illegitimately and violently occupied the North American territory, andhow this territory has always belonged to the Amerindian ancestors of the Chicanos:the Native Americans. Part of the history of the Americas that can n论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
