Chapter I Loss of Black Women’s Subjective Consciousness in Representation of Space
1.1 Loss of Race Consciousness: The Other in Racist Institution
Representation of space is spatial order discourse; the process of its formation reflects the power struggle of interest groups. The process of forming a discourse reflects a power struggle between interest groups. Usually, the stronger group wins, writes the representation of space and regulates the spatial order (Wang, 2012). The white is the stronger group and mainstream in society. They made some laws that were conducive to white and suppressed black people both physically and mentally, forcing black people to obey white representation of space in the early stage. In the later period, black people themselves internalized racial discrimination and white supremacy, descended to be the “Other” and completely lost the subjective consciousness.
For example, in The Women of Brewster Place, white people erect the wall in Brewster Street into a segregated area depriving them of rights in space, and ignoring the environment and security administration here. “According to Lefebvre, one result of the increasing dominance of these representations is the creation of readable (and reproducible) spaces and the hegemony of a logic of visualization1 which has become a taken-for-granted way of knowing” (Stewart, 1994). “The boulevard became a major business district, but in order to control traffic some of the auxiliary streets had to be walled off” (Naylor, 1983:2) White people sacrifice black’s living area. That wall is a “wall” of racial isolation and a wall of racial discrimination (Pang, 2014). Black women here have to live there with poor public security and facilities. Since then, the environment here has become worse and worse, and the sheriff also ignores the place. As a result, people live passively, but they could not protest this inequality because of racism. Black youths in the black community have nothing to do, they neither work nor go to school, such as Mattie’s son and Cora Lee’s children, and some of them even commit illegal acts that endanger black compatriots. White representations of space dominate Brewster Street, where white people drive blacks to the margins and leave them to fend for themselves.
1.2 Loss of Gender Consciousness: The Silenced in Patriarchal Discipline
Apart from racial representation of space, black women still confront with unequal gender treatment in society. Gender here is social gender. It refers to a social existence caused by the natural properties of living beings, and it is also a social culture and ideology that makes different value judgments on the identity of men and women (Liang, 2004:7). From the social gender, men have more advantages and values than women. So, in the patriarchal representation of space, men have always been in the dominant and controlling position, and women are in the secondary position of oppression and inequality. Therefore, women suffer double oppression. Naylor has said, “The goal as a writer is to give voice to groups that have been deprived of voice, and many black women have been deprived of voice. (Fang, 2012)” Black wome本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
