Chapter OneChurch Economy and The Transmutation of theChurch

A.“The Sisters”:The Commercialization of Theocracy

To begin with the opening story“The Sisters”,the reader has to note its firstsentence for its moral and existential significance as a frame story:“There was no hopefor him this time:it was the third stroke,”(Joyce 1)this sentence curtly tells us.In thecontext of the story, this sentence is related to the death of a disabused, mad, and paralytic priest James Flynn who died of a third stroke, which can also as the thirdstroke of a toll bell. However, the literate reader cannot lose the Reference to Dante’sDivine Comedy, the first sentence of which inscribed on the lintel of the entrance gate tohell also reads“Abandon all hope, all who enter here.”It follows that Joyce deeplysteeped in Italian literature inscribes his book in that literary moral tradition started byDante.Reference to sin and adequate suffering is made in the same book(Mickalites13).It is clear that Joyce depicts the tragedy of a priest’s death in“The Sisters”.As theopening chapter of Dubliners,it contains a number of descriptions of religion, and thussets the religious tone of the entire novel,i.e.,a rebellion against and a critique ofChristianity. The fact that religion is such an important topic in Joyce’s work is relatedto the background and circumstances in which he grew up.

B.“A Mother”:The Secularization of the Monasticism

The typical character here is a“mother”who invests her last penny on pianolessons and learning Gaelic on her one daughter bearing that mythological nameKathleen with which Ireland is identified by the cultural revivalists. It is enough to pointout here that the whole concern in this story is that monasticism is no longer a pious andsimple religious choice instead a trade between the hypocrisy convent and the civilian, making money out of a cultural heritage,a patrimony belonging to all the Irish people. This is suggested in the mother’s(Mrs.Kearney’s)insistence to be paid for threeperformed concerts dubiously arranged for her daughter Kathleen through her first andsecond performance turns out to be a totally failure.Monasticism is meant to form thebasis for cultural nationalism to resist the colonialism, but in this case,it is corrupted tobe a trade-off carried out under the blessing of the self-serving Catholic Church that themother represents.

At the time of Patrick’s mission, the monastic system does not seem to have been established in Ireland.Patrick introduced the idea of monasticism into Ireland. His workshows that many became monks and nuns, both from the highest and lowest levels ofsociety, and all suffered a lot of persecution. However, the nuns appear to be living inhomes rather than in separate convents.Monks(celibate clergy)may not live inmonasteries, either in the clerical-monastic community.Ireland did not have a separatemonastery in the early stages of its church founding, and it was the clergy who heldpower in the church.
