1.1 Introduction to Joyce Carol Oates and The Gravedigger's Daughter

Joyce Carol Oates(1938—)was born in Lockport,New York,and grew up ongrandfather's farm.Her father was a tool designer,her mother was a housewife,and they liveda poor but happy life.She developed a keen interest in writing from an early age.In 1953,atthe age of 15,Oates wrote her first novel,but was sadly rejected by the publisher because ofthe theme of drug abuse.After graduating from high school,she won a scholarship toSyracuse University and maintained excellent academic performance.After graduation,sheentered the University of Wisconsin in 1960 to pursue a master's degree.In 1961,she receiveda master's degree and began studying for a doctorate in English.From 1961 to 1967,Oatestaught at the University of Detroit and at the end of the century she moved to the Universityof Windsor in Canada.She and her husband co-founded The Ontario Review,and by the endof 1970s,Oates had been a faculty member at Princeton University.

Oates is one of the few prolific contemporary American writers to have written dozens ofbooks over the years,including novels,collections of short stories,teenage novels,plays,poems,and essays.She is the winner of the O.Henry Award,the National Humanities Medal,the PEN/Malamud Award,the Stone Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement,and the 2019Jerusalem Prize and many other awards.Oates pays attention to innovation in art,but alsoattaches great importance to tradition,and advocates that literature should reflect and describesocial life.Oates'works are mainly devoted to exposing the violence and evil in Americansociety.Violence becomes a common theme in Oates'novels,which involves rape,murder,abuse,metamorphosis and other physical,psychological or sexual injuries that people can orcannot imagine.Oates'works as a whole constitute a panorama of contemporary Americansocial life,reflecting the real life and spiritual world of all sectors of American society.Influenced by realistic writers such as Dickens,Balzac,Joyce,and Faulkner,she does exploreand innovate while adhering to realism.She attempts to use diverse art forms to portray thecharacters'psychological activities,like monologue and stream of consciousness.This makesher known as'female Faulkner'.
