However, they have no idea whether they suit them or not. Both teachers and students play important roles in the teaching of listening. Many Educational works indicated that “knowledge cannot be ‘taught’ by the teacher; instead, the learner takes in knowledge through a way of reconstructing the new knowledge into his own knowledge system.” What is more, “listening is a practical skill that can only be acquired through the practical use.” So when the listening strategies are presented to the listeners, “they must be attached to the practical use through listening activities.” Meanwhile, “the learner in a listening class must make himself/herself alert and active in the procedures of listening learning.” [16] Therefore, the author will deal with the part from students’ perspective and teachers’ perspective. 4.1 Recommended self-managements for junior school, senior school and college students No matter what leading listening barriers the students usually meet with when they are at different English learning stages, one point should be certain that students should attach importance to listening and get ready in mind, as mentioned above. Several ways are recommended here: first, to raise your interest. Second, to be an active listener. Third, to understand the nature of listening. There is a saying, “interest is mother of success.” No one can learn a foreign language well without being interested in it. “This interest, if maintained, will eventually become a kind of strong motivation for learning.” [17] Undoubtedly, a learner is eager to listen to everything about English just because he or she likes it. Just as he or she feels pleasant and enjoyable during the process of listening, he or she is willing to put his or her all effort into it and thus gets a quick improvement in listening com. Whether a listener plays an active role or not means a lot. In the author’s eye, an active listener should vigorously cooperate with the teacher; seriously finish the listening tasks assigned by the teacher. During the process of listening, an active listener is required to understand “how to use imagination to predict the content of the title, to listen for selected information, to activate their prior knowledge and life experience to take in new knowledge.” [18] To understand the nature of listening is a must to correct the wrong ideas in learners’ mind, that is, “everything that is said bears (equally) important information.”[19] However, as a matter of fact, even the native speakers with English as their mother tongue, do not require themselves to do so. On the contrary, they usually receive and interpret the utterance by means of prediction, or guess the content of a message, and select the more important or new information.
