1.1 The Source Text

Sociolinguistics is a descriptive study of the impact of all aspects of society,including cultural norms,expectations and contexts,how languages are used,and theimpact of society on language.It initially emerged in the United States in the 1960s asa marginal science.After more than half a century of development,sociolinguisticshas become maturer and maturer.In this field,research teams such as Labov,Milroy,Hudson,Wardhaugh,Fasold,and Coulmas have published a series of books.

The source text,An Introduction to Sociolinguistics(Third edition),isrecommended by my supervisor,which is a classic textbook.The author is RonaldWardhaugh,a professor of linguistics at the University of Toronto,Canada.The bookcovers a wide range of topics such as language,dialect,and varieties;pidgin andcreole languages;code choice;speech communities;language and gender;applicationof sociolinguistics,etc.Moreover,the book also reflects the development ofsociolinguistics from the end of the twentieth century to the beginning of thetwenty-first century.

The translation bases on the first to third chapters,mainly introducing the nature,scope,and research methods of the subject;language,dialect,and varieties;pidginand creole languages.This part involves many proper nouns,and long and complexsentences.Therefore,it is worthwhile to be a translation practice.

1.2 Purpose and Significance

The purpose and significance of the translation project is mainly presented in thefollowing aspects:

First,linguistic study is essential in language research.Language is the primarymaterial of translation and translators devote themselves to it.Sociolinguistics is abranch of linguistics which shows that the relationship between language and societyis interrelated.From Encyclopedia of Language&Linguistics,the purpose of studyingsociolinguistics is to“discover the systematic correspondence and mutual causality between social structural variation and linguistic structural variation.Provide basisand guidance for the determination or selection of standard language of a country ornation,the formulation and reform of words,language policy,language plan,language teaching and other researches(Brown,1993).”In other words,sociolinguistics integrates social,cultural,geographical,and historical factors into thestudy of language,and provides a scientific research system for linguists.Therefore,this book is worthwhile to be a translation practice.

Second,learning linguistics has direct significance to translation studies.In theprocess of translation,using translation methods and theories blindly is difficult toinnovate.If the empirical linguistic research can be incorporated into the translationprocess,most translation problems will be solved(He,2002).Hence,there is a closerelationship between linguistics and translation studies.The development of variousdisciplines of linguistics will also affect the development of translation disciplines.
