elf-esteem (i.e. high level of self-esteem) scored low on life satisfaction (i.e. high level of life satisfaction).
This finding has been supported by various studies. One such study was that of Chen, Cheung, Bond and Leung (2006) on self-esteem as a predictor of life satisfaction in China. They concluded that a significant predictor of life satisfaction was indeed self-esteem in China. Diener and Diener (1995) further suggest that this trend has been observed across societies; be it individualistic or collectivistic. Being satisfied with one's life also means to be happy and one factor that can affect happiness is self-esteem which is referred to as a feeling of happiness, gratification, dignity, a belief in one's own integrity and self-confidence related to a belief and confidence of succeeding in life (Skodol, 1998).
结论-CONCLUSION
The debate on the gender differences between men and women have been long going and this issue has inspired various writers, such as the aforementioned writer, John Gray. It is still an intriguing issue about which gender is the most intelligent, the happier and the most confident one. It has usually been stated that men are the ones to be blessed with intelligence and power, but what we can see now in the changing world is a different picture. Women are also being acclaimed for their brains, and power has been given to women to decide on what they want such that things are not always imposed on them- such as marriage. Indeed, it has been found that women could be happier than men.
Studies investigating sex-role orientation and self-esteem have been used in assessing occupational choices made by individuals. One such study was done by Jones and Lamke (1998). They argue that women with masculine traits having feminine occupations and women with androgynous traits having both feminine and masculine occupations were higher on self-esteem than the women with masculine traits working in masculine jobs. Hence, this implies that actually being more psychologically composed as a woman possessing masculine traits helps to build a career in a feminine occupational group. Other studies have focused on the effects of self-esteem on academic achievement, such as that by Pullman and Allik (2008) who found that high self-esteem could predict academic achievement.
However, one main limitation of the study is that due to the extreme uneven data received from participants concerning their ethnicity, regions and faculties to which they belong to, it was inappropriate to consider these as variables that could have affected scores on the PAQ dimensions, self-esteem and life satisfaction. Only gender was considered because an equal number of males and females were targeted to fill in the questionnaires. This present study can open the way for future researchers to focus on the different variables that could not be considered in this study, such as ethnicity, region and the programme of study of students to find differences in levels of self-esteem and life satisfaction.
