2.1 Foreign Language Anxiety
Anxiety is a kind of usual feeling. In psychology, anxiety is a lack of clear objectivereasons from uneasy inner world. It is a type of normal emotion when people facedangers, difficulties and challenges. Recording to different definitions, there have severaldifferent groups of anxiety. And it is a complicated issue to be discussed, especially inscientific investigation. Spielberger (1972:482) defines anxiety as “an unpleasantemotional state or condition which is characterized by subjective feelings of tension,apprehension, and worry, and by activation or arousal of the automatic nervous system'.Foreign language reading anxiety is a fear of psychological tension during foreignlanguage reading comprehension process. Foreign language learners predict, guess andworry about difficulties that come from English reading process, which cause the dangerto self-esteem. Foreign language reading anxiety could reduce the effect of readingperformance and cause nervousness. Foreign language reading anxiety could reduce the effect of readingperformance and cause nervousness. Many scholars did surveys into foreign language reading anxiety and therelationship with academic performance. For example, Saito et al. used ForeignLanguage Classroom Anxiety Scale and Foreign Language Reading Anxiety which wasdeveloped by them. The object of the research is 383 American students who studiedFrench, Russian and Japanese. The result of the research showed that foreign languagecould produce anxiety. Foreign language reading anxiety as a kind of phenomenon, havecommon point and difference with foreign language anxiety. There is non-relationshipbetween foreign language anxiety and mother tongue, but mother tongue did affect thelevels of foreign language anxiety. Different mother tongue has different influence onforeign language anxiety. When foreign language reading anxiety increases with thereading perceptual difficulty，final score decreases with the increases of foreign languagereading anxiety and foreign language anxiety.
