本文是一篇英语阅读论文,本研究在广州市番禺区某中学初二年级进行了为期1个学期的的英语阅读教学实验。在实验班采取了问题导向的5E教学模式,对照班采取PWP模式。实验的目的在于探究5E教学模式对初中生学习投入度的影响。

Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

As a means to ameliorate low academic performance and high levels of learningtedium or anxiety,the concept of learning engagement has attracted increasingattention.Fredricks et al.(2004)argued that engagement has the potential to be acomplex concept that combines the behavioral,affective,and cognitive aspects.As acritical element for students'Educational success,learning engagement is an essentialsignifier of students'learning process and academic success,as well as evaluation ofthe effectiveness of the curriculum and of students'growth(Lu,2009).The EnglishCurriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(edition 2022:51,52)states thatEnglish instruction should encourage students'enjoyment of learning.It shouldconsider not only'what to learn'but also whether students'enjoy learning'and'know how to learn'as learning engagement(affective and cognitive engagement)emphasizes.

In 2021,the Central Committee and State Council issued the Opinions onFurther Reducing the Homework Burden of Students in Compulsory Education andthe Burden of Off-campus Training(referred to as Double Reduction policy).'Themost notable aspect of Double Reduction policy is its emphasis on enhancing studentengagement.Therefore,the enhancement of classroom instruction should be viewedas a turning point in the implementation of Double Reduction'(Zhou&Fu,2021:1).As one of the most important subjects in primary education,English is in the lead forimplementing Double Reduction policy.The burden-reduction andquality-improvement goals can only be attained by increasing students’learningengagement in English classroom instruction.

1.2 Purposes of the Study

In junior high school English reading instruction,the Problem-oriented 5Eteaching model seeks to accomplish the following two primary goals:

This study's primary objective is to enhance learning engagement of junior highschool students.Thus,the researcher examines the impact of the 5E teaching modelon the learning engagement of junior middle school students in reading class usingjunior high school students as subjects.

The second objective of this research is to make the Problem-oriented 5E Modelmore applicable to literacy instruction.The traditional reading education paradigm,such as PWP,is rigid when used over the long term.It is detrimental to pupilengagement when teachers blindly adhere to procedures.In other disciplines,such asbiology,the 5E teaching model is extensively employed,but not in English.In recentyears,problem-based instruction has been promoted in the English classroom.Consequently,it is combined with the 5E teaching model in the research.In this way,the study could cast light on how to more effectively implement the Problem-oriented5E Model in junior high school English reading classes.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Learning Engagement
