5.1 Results of Test

The first question is to explore the effects of the theme-based instruction modelon senior high school students’English reading ability.In order to answer thisquestion,the author employed the pre-test before the teaching experiment and adoptedthe post-test after the teaching experiment both in EC and CC.The results of thepre-test and post-test applying descriptive statistics analysis,independent sample t-testand paired sample t-test are presented in this section.

5.1.1 Results of the pre-test of EC and CC

In order to learn about the initial level of students’English reading performanceand make sure students’English reading performance in EC and CC are at the samelevel before the teaching experiment,the independent sample t-test was adopted toanalyze the results of the pre-test as shown below.

Chapter Six Conclusion

6.1 Major Findings

The experiment was carried out in a senior high school in Guangzhou,with twoparallel classes serving as the experimental class and the control class respectively.The author collected the qualitative and quantitative data over 14 weeks by severalresearch instruments,including questionnaire and tests.Besides,the interview outlinewas also used as the supplementary support for the research.

This study attempts to investigate the effects of the theme-based instructionmodel on senior high school students’English reading performance and their readingability.By means of the employment the above-mentioned research instruments inaccordance with the two research questions,as well as the analysis and discussion ofthe research results,the following two major findings are obtained.

On the one hand,form the results of the pre-test,it had been known that thestudents’reading performance were at the same level in both EC and CC before theteaching experiment.Besides,based on the results of the post-test,the average scoreof the students in EC has increased significantly after applying the theme-basedinstruction model to English reading class.However,there was no significant changein the average score of the students in CC before and after the experiment.In otherwords,by comparing and analyzing the data before and after the experiment in the ECand CC,it can be drawn that the theme-based instruction model has a positive effecton students’English reading performance.
