As pointed out by ecofeminists, women and nature are both objectified and considered inferior under the anthropocentric dualism. And the status of black women slaves was even worse. Categorized as nonhuman, they were totally deprived of humanity and their womanhood was entirely trampled by white men. The following section will analyze the physical and emotional predicament of black women.

2.2.1 Their Exploited Body
Just as the industrial civilization exploited the earth in a reckless way, black women’s body held no value to the slave owners and was treated in a wicked way especially by white men.
For slave owners, the body of black women meant nothing but a commodity, a reproductive tool for more labors. Even their names were determined by their owners. When Baby was about to be free because Mr. Garner had agreed on Halle’s term, she asked him why he always called her Jenny, the name she never minded at the Sweet Home.
“Mr. Garner,” she said, “why you all call me Jenny?”
“’Cause that what’s on your sales ticket, gal. Ain’t that your name? What you call yourself?”
“Nothing,” she said. “I don’t call myself nothing.”
Slaves were traded as commodities in the market, and the owners surely did not care about their real names or their life stories, for they bought them just like they bought other farm facilities to help them in the fields or house. After ten years of harsh working at Sweet Home, Baby Suggs’ physical health was totally ruined. “Her hip hurt every single day ”, and her was not as useful as before, which was the reason for Mr. Garner agreed on Halle’s trade.
Rape is a common theme in black women writers’ works. Through the writing of black women raped by white slave owners, the author conveys that black women had no control over their own flesh and blood. They are properties, and thus the slave owners have the absolute authority over them. They could whip them, beat them and rape them as they please.
Sethe’s body suffers the most, and in all possible ways and her sufferings leave permanent mark on her body, that is, the tree-shaped scar on her back.
“After I left you, those boys came in there and took my milk. That’s what they came in there for. Held me down and took it. I told Mrs. Garner on em. She had that lump and couldn’t speak but her eyes rolled out tears. Them boys found out I told on em. Schoolteacher made one open up in my back and when it closed it made a tree. It grows there still.”
At that time, Sethe was pregnant with Denver and was milking the third daughter. The nephews of the schoolteacher’s were treacherous in treating Sethe. As recalled by Sethe, they teased her and sucked milk from her. The Schoolteacher whipped her so fiercely that an “open” was made in her back. As she told Paul D how she got the scar, her anger, even after eighteen years is still fresh as she says that “it grows there still.” Such abominable treatment left eternal mark on Sethe’s body and soul. Later revealed in the novel, the two boys not only took her milk for her child but also raped her there. Besides the obvious violence, the exploitation was done under the cover of knowledge. Schoolteacher was disguised in the messenger of knowledge, when he arrived at the Sweet Home, he carried loads of books and “made his pupils sit and learn books for a spell every afternoon” . In his teaching, he taught the pupils to study the slave on the farm. Sethe once overheard what he was teaching about her, “No, n论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
