The baby-boomers,  who  would  soon  become  the  main  force  of  the  Counterculture Movement, felt a strong generation gap with their parents partly because their space for  free,  distinctive  expressions  and  individuality  was  compressed;  independent thinking and vibrant youth culture were controlled and compromised by conservative tradition and ubiquitous capitalism. Chapter 2 Nurturing Individualism (1962-1964)

2.1 Leftist Radicalism: From the Old to the New

From 1962 to 1964, Dylan established his fame as a folk singer and the acclaim as “voice of the generation” through his first 3 albums, where he craftily inherited the troubadour tradition of protest from Woody Guthrie and modified the artist’s stance from what was old left 20 years ago to a new left ideology under the influence of Port Huron Statement, most visibly represented by anti-war songs. Dylan’s shift and the concurrent New Left Movement shared a reciprocal relationship, both of which were instrumental to the outbreak of Counterculture Movement.

Woody Guthrie was remembered as the man who “transformed the folk ballad into a vehicle for social protest and observation” (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 1988).  His  work  is  often  characterized  by  condemnation  of  the  war  and  the sympathy for the weak and poor. In his most famous album, Dust Bowl Ballads, Guthrie paints a series of poignant pictures about the loss Oklahoma people suffered due to the catastrophic dust storms in the 1930s. “The Great Dust Storm” reports like news: “On the 14th day of April of 1935/ There struck the worst of dust storms that ever filled the sky,” but sympathizes like a family member in reality: “Our relatives were huddled into their oil boom shacks/ And the children they was crying as it whistled through the cracks” (Guthrie, 1940). The relentless dust might turn people  into  “Dust  Bowl  Refugee,”  and  worse  consequence  could  be  “Dust Pneumonia” that the poor couldn’t afford to cure, but Guthrie held an inherent optimism that even if everyone is killed and everything destroyed, the dust still “can’t kill me” (Guthrie, 1937).

2.2 On the Front of Anti-Racism

Dylan’s anti-war songs, as analyzed, can be attributed to Woody Guthrie and New  Left. Although  Guthrie  often  expressed  in  his  songs  a  sympathetic  view owards common people, black people were not specifically included; although the New  Left  crusaded  for  Civil  Rights  Movement,  political  activism  of  the  white students never reached a degree of cross-racial sympathy.
