Chapter 1. Introduction

1.1 Background and significance of the research

For the past several years, Chinese government has been advocating the Going-out  Policy,  especially  in  the  cultural  sphere.  Meanwhile,  with  the  improvement  of China’s status in the international community since its reform and opening-up, more and more contemporary Chinese literatures have caught the attention from the outside world.  Many  foreign  publishers,  translators  and  sinologists  get  involved  in  the translation and introduction of extraordinary contemporary Chinese literature to the outside world, which serves as an effective channel for foreigners to know about China as well as Chinese literature and writers.

Since Happy Dreams, which is originally written by Jia Pingwa and translated by Nicky Harman, was officially published by Amazon Crossing in November, 2017, it has aroused a great deal of discussions and reviews on foreign websites like Amazon and Goodreads. According to statistics from Amazon, the sales of Happy Dreams has significantly surpassed the other two translated novels of Jia Pingwa, The Abandoned Capital and The Lantern Bearer. At the same time, it has also obtained much more reviews and favorable scores, which gives it a relatively leading position among all the English versions of contemporary Chinese literatures. And it even got more reviews than Sandalwood Penalty written by Mo Yan. The successful introduction of Happy Dreams, featuring abundant local customs and living conditions of lower-class people in Shaanxi, to the English world can be regarded as an extraordinary breakthrough for Chinese  literature  against  the  background  of  Chinese  government’s  advocation  of exporting Chinese literature to the rest of world in order to enhance China’s cultural influence on the world stage.

1.2 Research objectives

Adopting both the descriptive and quantitative research methods, this thesis aims to  figure  out  the  reception  of  Happy  Dreams  in  English  world  as  well as  how  the translation of Happy Dreams helps to forge the images of the novel, author and further the Chinese nation based on the textual and paratextual information. In order to find out the real reception of Happy Dreams in English world, we tend to look up on foreign websites to collect data about the sales and library collection as well as the feedbacks of Happy Dreams in the English world, which enable us to find out how Happy Dreams has been accepted by English world. Furthermore, this thesis is also written to analyze the images of the characters, the novel, the author and even Chinese society this book has left to English readers based on the translation strategies adopted by the translator, the preface, interview records about Happy Dreams, the reviews on Happy Dreams from some foreign journals, media and public readers.
