Under these circumstances, they use vague language to explore the intention of their counterparts and to protect them from being proved to be wrong later, or even being caused into lawsuits. In this way, they can avoid some awkward situations and gain more profit for themselves.

3.2 The translation approaches of vague language

As vague language plays a vital role in international business exchanges, it is of great importance to use vague language appropriately. A good translation of vague language will no doubt reinforce the mutual understanding and facilitate the process of business transactions. Following I will introduce three main approaches to translate vague language in this part.

3.2.1 Equivalence translation

There are many vague words which have the same meaning in English and Chinese, therefore we can choose the according vague Chinese words to translate. That means we choose according vague words from target language to convey the thought expressed by vague words in source texts. Through this we can achieve the translation effect of semantic and pragmatic equivalence. This requires translators can not only understand the meaning of vague words in source language, but can also choose the appropriate vague words from target language. For instance:

(1) The seller must deliver the goods at the time required by the contract, or in any other cases, within a reasonable time after the conclusion of the contract.

卖方必须按照合同规定的时间交货，在其他情况下，应在合同订立后一段合理时间内交货。

Here the vague words “other” and “reasonable” can be translated as “其他” and “合理”. The target words have the equivalent meaning and pragmatic effect with the original words.

3.2.2 Proper omission of words

Another way to properly translate vague language is omission. In order to make our translated version more brief and accurate, we often appropriately omit some words and expressions. This doesn’t mean we go against faithfulness and omit the information conveyed by vague language freely. On the contrary, we often choose to omit some words (such as prepositions, articles, certain pronouns, conjunctions, etc) which are indispensable in the source texts but not in the target texts. For example:

(2) We as the seller reserve the right to lodge a claim for direct losses sustained, if any.

作为卖方，我们有权对遭受的直接损失提出赔偿。

In this translation, the vague expression “if any” is omitted.

3.2.3 Addition of proper words

Addition of proper words is also an effective approach to translate vague language. It means adding necessary words to our translation on the basis of accurate understanding of the original text. The purpose of amplification is to express the thought of the author more precisely when needed. It doesn’t mean adding the content of the original language without limitation.
