1.1 Research Background of the Study

Higher vocational Colleges represent a new direction in our education system.What's more, English is the main course for students there. Vocabulary teaching andlearning has long been an intractable problem in these colleges. It is necessary for theteachers in higher vocational colleges to master the philosophy of teachingmethodology of English vocabulary in order that their students can achieve aneffective way of foreign language learning.It has been pointed out by some scholars that many students coining fromdomestic higher vocational colleges have great trouble in English learning due to thereason that their poor vocabulary. Limited vocabulary influences their reading ability，listening ability, expressing ability and writing ability. In fact，vocabulary imposed a big challenge on English vocabulary teaching and learning in many higher vocationalcolleges. Both teachers and students spend much time and energy in vocabularyteaching and learning, however, the reward is very baffling.The amount of a learner's vocabulary directly influences the development of hislanguage competence and the effectiveness of vocabulary teaching is directly relatedto the learners' language ability. However, we can find the disappointed reality ofEnglish vocabulary teaching in many higher vocational colleges.
