ies and the Englishvocabulary acquisition.
2. If the correlation does exist, what is it? Will using e-dictionaries facilitate or hinderlearners’ English vocabulary acquisition?
3. Whether such correlation is affected by the L2 learners’ different vocabulary levels.

Part Two Literature Review

2.1 Studies on Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition at Home and Abroad
According to Richards, Platt & Weber (1989), vocabulary is a set of lexemes, includingsingle words, compound words and idioms. Vocabulary learning is more than the study ofindividual words, since a prominent amount of the English languages is made up of lexicalphrases, which range from phrasal verbs (two or three words) to longer institutionalizedexpressions (Lewis, 1993).

2.1.2 Definition of Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition
According to R.Ellis, acquisition can be broadly defined as the internalization of rules andformulas which are then used to communicate in the L2 (R.Ellis, 1985). And second languageacquisition can be defined as the way in which people learn a language other than their mothertongue, inside or outside of a classroom (R.Ellis, 1985).Coady, J & Huckin, T (2000) pointed out that the field of language acquisition researchinvestigates how people attain proficiency in a language that is not their mother language.Susan M. Gass and Larry Selinker (2001) said, in general, the second language acquisitionrefers to the process of learning another language after the native language has been learned.Sometimes, the term refers to the learning of a third or fourth language. The important aspect isthat the second language acquisition refers to the learning of non-native language after thelearning of the native language. As to how to judge whether one has acquired a new word or not, there are no specificstandards. The simplest way is to check whether one can recognize it or remember its meaning.Jang Nan (2000) pointed out that although this kind of definition had not yet been accepteddefinitely; many studies on the acquisition of vocabulary in the second language followed itsfootsteps. Other scholars, such as Dai Weidong viewed that if one acquires a new word, it meanshe has known a set of knowledge about the word.In the present study, there is no special indication of differences between acquisition andlearning, which are sometimes identified respectively as the spontaneous process of ruleinternalization that results from natural language use, and the development of conscious L2knowledge through formal study.
