1.1 Research background of the study
作为语言的基本技能之一,写作一直重视语言教师和研究人员几十年。有两个原因,他们的注意力集中在第二语言写作。其一,写作是语言学习者语言输出时,最重要的途径获得第二语言知识,这是更为困难比其他三种基本技能。对于大多数非英语专业学生掌握写作是很难,因为他们应该有很多的语言能力,而他们在英语写作,如拿起正确的词汇,正确的句子,以及光滑的和有意义的通道。更糟的是,非英语专业学生的写作能力是不能令人满意的,他们的老师总是可以找到许多不正确和不连贯的句子和图案在他们的著作。例如,几年的英语学习后,学生们获得了大量的英语单词和表达,然而,他们无法在自由,顺畅地表达自己的意见和想法,与自己的词汇。这些类型的问题主要是由于学生不理解其中的含义词语和词句深入的事实。此外,他们还可以选择适当的词来组织一个通道可高达语法和内容的英语水平,因为非母语和外语之间的等价。换句话说,这种现象是由母亲的话语语言传输。另一种情况是,学生使用英语vocabularyissatis厂,但主题句的能力在他们的作品中总是少不了。这是因为很多中国人总是用自己的母语英语写作中这种写作模式。这些英语学习者有没有意识中国写作模式,没有在英语写作tfit。此外,也有自己的写作,如单词拼写,单数形式,词义,句子的形式等,其中大部分是从母语转移引起的各种错误。
As one of the basic language skills, writing has been paid attention to by languageteachers and researchers for several decades. There are two reasons for their focusing attentionon the second language writing. One is that writing is the most important way of languageoutput when language learners acquire the second language knowledge, which is much moredifficult than the other three basic skills. Writing is hard for most non-English majors to master,as they should have many linguistic abilities while they are writing in English, such as pickingup proper vocabulary, making correct sentences, as well as producing a smooth and meaningfulpassage. What’s worse, non-English majors’ writing ability is unsatisfactory, for their teacherscan always find many incorrect and incoherent sentences and patterns in their writings. Forexample, after learning English for several years, students have acquired a large amount ofEnglish words and expressions; however, they cannot express their ideas and thoughts freelyand smoothly with their own vocabulary. These kinds of problems are mainly resulted from thefact that students don’t understand the meaning of words and expressions intensively.Furthermore, they cannot choose the proper words to organize a passage which can be up to thegrammar and content standard of English because of the non-equivalence between the nativelanguage and the foreign language. In other words, this phenomenon is caused by mothertongue language transfer. Another situation is that students’ ability of using English vocabularyis satisfactory, but the topic sentences are always missed in their compositions. This is becausemany Chinese always use this kind of writing pattern of their mother tongue in their Englishwriting. These English learners have no consciousness that the Chinese writing pattern doesn’tfit in English writing. Besides, there are also various errors in their writing such as wordspelling, singular form, word meaning, sentence form and so on, most of which are causedfrom mother tongue transfer.
Since we have found that there are many problems in students’ writing which are causedby language transfer of their mother tongue, we should review some related theories. In fact,many linguists have done a lot of researches about language transfer. Transfer, one of the basicconditions of learning foreign language, refers to the influence of the prior knowledge onsubsequent learning. Ellis (1999:152) claims that “One of the manifestations of languagetransfer in second language acquisition is the occurrence of errors which are caused bynegative transfer of mother tongue”. According to Ausubel, Novak & Hanesian (1978), there is not any learning procedure in the world without being influenced by the past cognitivestructure.
