Driven by economic globalization and opening-up policy, China’s automobile industry has developed in a good way and has achieved certain competitiveness in the world. For the rapid development of China’s automobile industry at home and abroad and striving for greater international competitiveness, how to promote domestic cars better to foreign countries has become an urgent problem to be studied. In this background, domestic automobile enterprises are also making efforts to develop and sell their own-produced cars abroad. For sustainable development, enterprises need to constantly improve their products and optimize after-sales services.

The author was arranged to have a six-month internship in Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor Co., Ltd. from July 20, 2021 to January 20, 2022. The company not only occupies an important market in China, but also opens up foreign markets with many foreign businesses. In order to meet the needs of foreign customers, many important materials need to be translated by translators. During the internship, the company distributes X Brand Passenger Vehicle Maintenance Manual as the translation task. The full text of the maintenance manual is in Chinese, which mainly introduces the basic information and maintenance methods of SX5K passenger vehicle, and covers all important systems of this vehicle. The content of the maintenance manual is detailed, pictures and texts are abundant, the data is accurate, the language is professional and rigorous, and it is both scientific and practical. The driver information system and steering system are selected from the manual as the materials of this report. The contents of the two systems are about 17000 words, which mainly include maintenance precautions, special maintenance tools, system overview, maintenance data and specifications, indicator lamp description, basic parameters of the instrument, schematic diagram, disassembly and installation methods, basic diagnosis process, fault diagnosis codes, common faults and troubleshooting methods, etc.

1.2 Significance of the Project

The significance of the research on the translation project will be introduced from two sides.

Theory and practice are inseparable. Theory should be tested and improved through translation practice. Theories without practical proof are lack of scientificity and it is not conducive to the development of theory. The maintenance manual elaborates the maintenance and diagnosis process and precautions of SX5K passenger vehicle. It belongs to the sci-tech text with data in accuracy, content in objectivity and logic with reason. In recent years, among all the studies on communicative translation and semantic translation theory, most of them are on the translation of foreign propaganda texts, business texts and literary texts, but few of them are on the translation of sci-tech texts. Therefore, the translated text of maintenance manual to be studied can enrich the study of communicative translation and semantic translation theory and contribute to their development in the field of sci-tech translation.
