Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1The studies on the memory theory and vocabulary memorymethods abroad
The study of memory has a long history, but the relevant studies are not made bylinguists until the early twentieth century. During which concentrated efforts weremade to study the memory theory. One of them worth mentioning was the pioneeringwork done by the German psychologist~Hermann Ebbinghaus, He found tbrough hisexperiment that the memory of learning materials had much to do with the passage oftime, and forgetting happened quickly at the beginning, and then slowed down afterlearning. This finding benefited the vocabulary revision work to consolidate theretention of English words,and it also guided the studies on the vocabulary memorymethods, contributing to the combination of the memory theories with memorymethods. Another memory theory of great influence was the proposing of the memorymodel consisting of the sensory memory,the short-term memory and the long-termmemory by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968,who also explored the particular functionseach memory unit performed in the process of receiving, storing and retrievinginformation, plus their characteristics. This discovery shed light on the complexitiesof information processing,and gave people more reasons to account for thephenomenon of vocabulary retention.

2.2 The studies on the memory theory and vocabulary memorymethods in China
Chinese linguists' work has experienced the stage from concentrating theirattention on introducing the foreign memory theories and memory methods tocarrying out the independent research (Wu Qianguang, 1982). Buyuan (1992)explored the three factors that affected the retention of English words; he also touchedupon the memory methods. Ma Guanghui studied the classifications of memory. Hegrouped the memory into mechanical memory, associative memory, independentmemory and connection memory, which was a step forward in the field of memorymethod study. Li Liwen and Ren Changhui (2001) did an interview with somestudents, of whom fifty-five percent students used the contextual memory method tomemorize English words, and twenty- five percent students employed the rotelearning method. Zhang Yaping (2002) conducted an empirical study which showedthat a better memory effect would be achieved if students used two or moreassociation methods to commit words to memory during learning. Xu Yaohua (2003)made an investigation of the correlation between the vocabulary memory methods andthe middle school students' vocabulary size. Yang Zhiliang and Guo Liping (1999)studied the characteristics of the implicit memory and explicit memory through theexperiment.
