Chapter Four Comparison Between MMM and AMM


4.1 The similarities between MMM and AMM.
Firstly, Both MMM and AMM are instrumental; they display the similarity in thegoal of memory. They are aimed at accomplished the task of retaining the processedinformation and keeping it in long-term memory. They go through the process ofencoding and decoding information which is in the form of memory tasks. The twosuggested methods act as the bridge between the linguistic input and linguistic storage.Secondly, the theoretical mechanism which can be used to interpret MMM and AMMis similar. The memory of English vocabulary will last longer if certain aspects ofword information are processed more deeply, no matter what it is sound, form andmeaning, or whatever. Once the most salient feature of a word is stored in permanentmemory, other aspects of it which are less prominent will be processed as well tosome extent, however, the processing of them might be relatively shallow. TheEnglish words to- be remembered by means of either MMM or AMM can beprocessed finely in the mind,which is achieved through repetition or association.Thirdly, the two suggested methods will be affected by the phenomenon of forgettingwithout doubt, there exists a tug of war between them. Therefore,how to minimizethe influence of the forgetting of English vocabulary is a shared task the twosuggested methods have to deal with, the solution to it is planned review, of whichrepeated review is an important part. The MMM which is characterized by mechanicalrepetition is able to make the memory trace of a processed word more accurate,油ereas AMM can enlarge the known knowledge system by assimilating the newinformation of a word. They can thus work in reducing the forgetting in a way.

Conclusion


Through the exhaustive discussion and explanation, we now dispel the doubt ofthe importance of vocabulaiy memory in Second Language Acquisition, the problemrelated to vocabulary memory method is an urgent proposition for both scholars andeducators, which has a direct influence on English teaching and learning. SeniorGrade One students have to experience the transition from junior high school to seniorhigh school,where their former learning methods and habit are to be challengeddramatically. Although senior high school students generally have many problemswith English learning such as poor grammar knowledge,small vocabulary size, badwriting ability and regrettable listening skills, yet a lack of effective vocabularymemory methods is a fact among senior high school students, failure to tackle thisproblem will lead to vocabulary learning situation going from bad to worse.
