Conclusion


In conclusion, on the basis of empirical research, we know that when learners learn a newlanguage, they would use their learnt knowledge of their mother tongue during the process oflearning and it's better for the teachers to use mother tongue when teaching some difficult points,such as vocabulary and grammar knowledge, in order to make the learners understand theknowledge they are learning, also supported by Krashen's input hypothesis.This study suggests that mother tongue can be profitable, that is the positive transfer inforeign language learning if it is appropriately used. Still, what we should make it clear is thatthe employment of Chinese should not be stereotyped. It is varied with the change of students'status of English language. In the initial stage, students are equipped with little knowledge ofEnglish language, thus teacher's employment of Chinese is of great help in students'understanding on the new language. However, when the students have acquired enough relatedknowledge which enables them to understand in English, the teachers should teach English inEnglish itself. In this way, much more input in English is worked on the learners to help them tocultivate the English thinking gradually. Although we can make full use of mother tongue tofacilitate foreign language learning, it is still notable that the application of mother tongue is justmedium, not the ultimate goal, which in fact refers to the situation that the proficiency of theforeign language enables students to communicate with the native speakers in that language.Therefore, the language teachers should comply with the language teaching objective law andmake rational use of mother tongue.
