rough role models, games and toys, children’s literature and educational institutions. Individuals learn their language and culture long before they learn to think independently. Children just absorb the prejudice against girls and women in the sex-biased first readers and textbooks and develop according to gender stereotyping.
The educational systems in many cultures socialize people into different roles in the cultures. One of the most pervasive influences is the literature, or writings that children read and that others read to them. In these children’s literature, girls are pictured as kind, attentive and serving, while boys are pictured as adventuresome and strong. The basic difference between the sexes is summed up as ‘boys do’, and ‘girls are’. Teachers, who are also important agents of socialization, tend to regard boys as more creative than girls. Their language, such as the way they talk to pupils, may also impact on students learning experience.
Socialization through the mass media begins even earlier than socialization in the educational system. Through fairy tales and Disney movies children learn that females succeed by being beautiful, obedient, passive and subordinate to men; only in this way can they marry and live happily ever after.
Mass media also have a great influence on people’s view about gender. People spent a lot of time watching TV and reading newspaper. So few people escape exposure to the vivid patterns of images, information and values in the world of mass media, among which some are sex-biased. Because of the effect of society and culture, the ideology of women’s dependent on man has been deep-rooted and developed into a kind of social psychology.
To sum up, historically, it was religion that depreciated or excluded women, which caused the present sexism in English. [14] But the main cause of sexism in English is the social reality. It may be social in origin rather than linguistic. [15] Because of the effect of society and culture, the ideology of sexism against female has been deep – rooted and developed into a kind of social psychology.
Language cannot be sexist itself, therefore, it is not responsible for sexism; it merely reflects it. [16] So the success of eliminating sexism lies in the social change. If social inequality remains, linguistic attempts to achieve real equality are anything but impossible.
4. Conclusion
Language is seen by many feminists as a powerful instrument of patriarchy. Sexism against female in English can be seen from many aspects, in masculine terms, naming and addressing practices, word order and it also exists in proverbs and English slang. This kind of ideology has become a social psychology, and it is much more difficult to trace. The roots of sexism can be discussed from historical and cultural aspects as the author presents above.
Although the realist meaning of reforming sexism in English has not generally accepted, [17] in the author’s opinion, the research of sexism in English language is significant for people’s awareness of the harm of sexism in English for women and it can strengthen people’s sensitivity and rejection to sexism in English. What is more, it is meaningful to cultivate cross—culture awareness and develop such ability. And in English teaching process, teachers’ operation should not be ignored.
