t they could do as well as men. 2. Women’s Emancipation Movement Women’s emancipation movement was the direct result of awareness. After American women found that they were treated unequally and lost most human rights, they began to struggle for themselves. Firstly, we should introduce some information about feminism, for the feminists led these movements. Feminism was the advocacy of social equality for men and women, in opposition to patriarchy and ***ism. Feminists support five general principles: the importance of change; expanding human choice; eliminating gender stratification; ending ***ual violence; promoting ***ual freedom. There are many movements, let’s take the struggle for women’s suffrage as an example. In order to amend the Constitution admitting women to full citizenship, many women stood out. One of them was Angelina Grimke, the first women to speak before an American legislative body. She said the following to the legislators: Are we aliens because we are women? Are we bereft of citizenship because we are mothers, wives and daughters of a mighty people? Have women no country… I hold, Mr. Chairman, that American women have to do this subject…but because it is political, inasmuch as we are citizens of Republic and such our honor, happiness and well- being are bound up in its politics, government and laws. (Grimke,1999) In 1912, the NAWSA (National American Woman Suffrage Association) organized a march to support a constitutional amendment for suffrage. Over 5,000 women dressed in white, some on horseback, paraded through the streets of Washington before Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration. The police offered the marchers no protection. This lack of protection made the public angry and attracted media attention to the suffrage movement. The NAWSA took advantage of the favorable publicity, launching a petition drive and sending regular delegations to press President Wilson for a national solution. In April 1916 with purpose of “making the world safe for democracy,” women began to picket the White House, the police arrested large groups of women, but the cycle continued until local jails were filled to capacity. By Nov., public opinion had shifted in favor of women’s rights to vote, In June 1919, Congress passed the Nineteenth Amendment, and the necessary 36 states ratified it the following year. Women’s organizations gained women’s rights to vote. Then, let us look at how they gained the education rights. Education for women was so difficult that at the early of 19th century, none university accepted a girl. In some areas, the junior schools and colleges only allowed boys to be their students. People would laugh at those women who got higher education. Though at the end of the 19th century, junior school and middle school opened their doors to girls, but females were still forbad to get high education. There was even a book saying that tense study would make female barren, and this opinion widely affected the public. Sara Morrison was one of the pioneers fighting for the education right. In 1857, she graduated from a two-to –three- year high institution, and made her application to Indiana University. However, all teachers and students there refused her. After her 9-year’s efforts, she entered this university. On campus she faced lots of pressures and hostilities; finally, she got her diploma in 1864. After her success, Females University were founded, some new private ones also accepted both girls and b论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
