it‘s an old Chinese saying and when applied in different situations,different interpreted versions should be adopted. On that occasion, the interpreterskillfully interpreted it into ―we would always beat swords to ploughs‖. ―干戈‖ and―玉帛‖ are even unfamiliar to some Chinese, so if interpreted literally, the versionwill hardly make sense for listeners who speak another language. As a matter of fact,―干戈‖ is a kind of weapon used in ancient wars, while ―玉帛‖ stands for a kind ofsilk in ancient times and is usually utilized as exchanging gifts between countries toshow their willingness to stay in peace. Without the basic understanding of Chinesehistory or culture, even the interpreter can barely catch the meaning that Premierindicated. In a word, for interpreters, to deal with these culture-loaded expressionsproperly is accounted into one of their basic qualifications. With good awareness andalertness of culture-loaded expressions interpreters can be regarded as moreprofessional and more competent for the interpreting of political talks.The current trend shows that more and more national leaders prefer adoptingwords or phrases with abundant Chinese culture implications in it, such as the word―不折腾‖ which triggered heated discussion years ago in interpreting field. It is withthis trend, as well as the importance of political talks that the author decides toconduct a study on the interpreting of culture-loaded expressions in political talks.

1.2 Purpose of the Research

The purpose of this research can be elaborated from the following twoperspectives: firstly, the result of this study to offer a better guidance for theinterpreting activities. Secondly, it may enhance the further exploration of SkoposTheory and its application in interpreting.As has been discussed in the last section, the interpreting of culture-loadedexpressions is a very challenging task for interpreters. On the other hand, the specialcharacteristics of political talks have made this work more demanding. Therefore, inthis thesis, the author hopes to figure out the specific coping strategies in theinterpreting of culture-loaded expressions in political talks and at the same time,propose some basic requirements for interpreters.Nowadays, quite a few interpreters lack the basic knowledge about Chineseculture and are not familiar with those idioms, proverbs or poems. In this thesis, byconducting a study on those culture-loaded expressions, the author attempts to givesome reminding to interpreters to pay attention to our traditional cultures and customs.In preparation work, almost no interpreter can make full preparation for theculture-loaded expressions which they are going to encounter in the later job.Therefore, bearing in mind some basic interpreting coping skills of culture-loadedexpressions can also greatly help interpreters avoid making mistakes.Another purpose of this thesis is to further expand the application of SkoposTheory in interpreting. Skopos Theory is originally a concept in the field oftranslation. It is part of a theory of translational action. ―Translation is regarded as theparticular variety of translational action which is based on a source test. In this theory,the dominant factor of each translation is its purpose.‖ (Reiss&Vermeer 1984:96) Itsmain idea is that ―the aim of any translational action, and the mode in which it is to berealized, are negotiated with the client who commissions the action.
