2.2 Studies on Metaphor
What is worse, the long western tradition of semanticstudy was restricted to the lexical level. Meanings of lexicons were categorized into afinite set of stable elements. When this relative stability was tacitly equated with somesort of permanence, the human metaphoricity was aptly eschewed and devalued andregarded as auxiliary and decorative. This was certainly attributable to the relativelyeasy manageability of lexical meaning. But the defect of this practice is obvious in thatit results in the conception of metaphor as an abnormal or deviant languagephenomenon. So Ricoeur (1977,27) was quite effusive in expressing his regret overthis “a purely rhetorical treatment of metaphor is the result of the excessive anddamaging emphasis put initially on the word." Taking this into account, it is no surpriseto see that metaphor once attracted far less attention than it deserved.
