This thesis discusses the meaning and use of the subjunctive mood, and analyzesthe subjunctive mood from a cognitive perspective on the basis of the conceptualmapping theory and prototype category theory.After the research done through the thesis, several major finding are achieved.The meaning of subjunctive mood can be classified into factual meaning, theoreticalmeaning and hypothetical meaning. The semantic essence of subjunctive mood is alsoexplored, namely psychological imperative, indirect imperative and mandativeimperative.Concerning its use in main clause, it is usually used in optative and hortativeclauses while for subordinate clauses，the application scope is the declarative andinterrogative clauses. Moreover, subjunctive mood can also be used in adverbial clausesindicating time, concession, condition and purposes. Examples are given for deeperunderstanding. In this chapter, it is found that subjunctive mood has the pragmaticfimctions of indirect speech, speech regulation and cognition.
