After the Second World War in 1945, mainland China was taken over by communists. Under communist rule, all religions were forbidden. Naturally, all Shaolin training was also prohibited. Later, under the communist party, Wushu training was established at the National Athletics Institute. [2]

Chinese martial arts started to spread internationally with the end of the Second World War and the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. Many well known martial artists migrate to Taiwan, Hong Kong and other parts of the world. Those masters started to teach within the overseas Chinese communities but eventually they expanded their teachings to include people from other ethnic groups. Chinese martial arts are now a vital part of Chinese culture.

These fighting techniques became an art and ancient Chinese civilization adopted this art. It became part and parcel of their life. This art was influenced by religious, spiritual and other philosophical elements of Chinese culture. It is due to this influence that Yin/Yang Theory and Bagua concepts were later adopted and were blended into this art of fighting and self-defense.

Yin and Yang Theory

In gungfu the concept of yin yang (??) is the basic Philosophy behind. The theory of yin/yang, a pair of mutually complementary forces that act continuous, without cessation, in this universe. This chinese way of life can be applied to anything. The black part of the circle is called Yin(?). Yin can represent anything in the universe as negativeness, passiveness, gentleness, insubstantiality, femaleness, moon, darkness, night etc. The other white part is Yang(?), which represents positiveness, activeness,firmness, substantiality, maleness, sun, brightness, day, etc.

We often consider that this yin/yang symbol are opposite to each other. that is yang being the opposite of yin and vice versa. As long as we separate this oneness into two, we would not achieve realization. Actually all things have their complementary part. Actually, all things have their complementary part it is only human mind and his perception that they are being separated into opposites. The sun is not the oposite of the moon, as they complement and are interdepedent on each other, and we cannot survive without either of them. In a similar way, a male is complement of female but wihout male female is nothing and vice versa. The one-ness of Yin/Yan is necessary in life as it produces balance in the life just as the result of some action there is a reaction. Without action there would be no reaction and vice versa.
