Swales and they worked within a similar “rhetorical ‘paradigm’ or schema” (327),and that there were some differences between English and Chinese RA introductions in terms of move structure, length and the use of citation. A much more recent study on the rhetoricalorganization of English and Chinese RA introductions was conducted by Chek kim Loi (2010)from Educational psychology using Swales’ (1990, 2004) model of move analysis, whichrevealed that Chinese introductions employed fewer rhetorical moves and steps in comparisonwith the English. The above two studies are both the contrastive rhetorical studies on RAintroductions in Chinese and English. However, in terms of the textual organization ofEnglish research article introductions written by Chinese scholars, there is no study on it.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

In this Chapter, literature on academic writing, especially on research articles (RAs) isreviewed, the instrument of this study, Swales’ Create A Research Space Model and itsdevelopment introduced, and the previous studies on the research article (RA) introductionsare discussed so as to indicate a gap which this study will fill in

2.1 Academic Writing
In resent years, there has been considerable interest in the study of academic writing whichhas developed into a new genre. Here, the genre is “commonly defined as a set of textssharing a particular communicative purpose and a set of discourse conventions, includingoverall organization, grammatical and vocabulary choices” (Samraj, “Discourse features” 6).In general, there are two lines of research on the study of academic writing. One line ofresearch has focused on the grammatical and stylistic aspects of written academic texts, forexample, Burrough-Boenisch (2003) and Hinkel (2004) studied the use of tense and aspect;Soler (2002) investigated the use and function of adjective; Flowerdew (2003) concentratedon the nouns of the academic discourse, and so on. Another line of research has concentratedon textual organization of academic discourses ranging from the study of conference paper(Rowley-Jolivet, 2002) to textbook (Moore, 2002).
