This study was designed to investigate the textual organization of the English research article(RA) introductions in the field of marine science written by Chinese scholars based onSwales’ (1990, 2004) CARS model and to see to what extent this textual organizationpattern conforms to Swales’ (1990, 2004) CARS model. Forty English RA introductionswritten by Chinese scholars in the field of marine science were collected from the Journal ofMarine Science and Application as the corpus and were analyzed using Swales’ (1990, 2004)CARS model in terms of moves and steps. Through analysis, the major findings of this studyare concluded as follows:
Firstly, three moves are identified in the RA introductions written by Chinese scholars andthey are consistent with the three ones outlined in Swales’ (1990) CARS model. But theweight given to them varies, with the frequency of Move 1 and Move 2 outnumbering Move 3.On move structure, the prototypical sequence, M1-M2-M3 in the CARS model is stillpredominant in this corpus, but it is found sometimes to combine with other moves or movesequences. Meanwhile, other varieties, such as M1-M3, M1-M2-M1-M3, andM1-M2-M1-M2-M1-M3 are also found, though with lower frequency. In addition, adistinctive feature about the move structure of the RA introductions in this corpus is thecycles of Move 1 and Move 2.
Secondly, there are totally 13 steps employed in the three moves, with 10 steps consistent with those outlined in Swales’ (1990) model and three steps in Swales’ (2004) model. However, thedistribution of these steps is not even, with the steps such as “making topic generalization”,“indicating a gap” and “announcing present research” frequently employed and the steps suchas “counter-claiming”, “question-raising” and “presenting research hypotheses” rarely used.Additionally, it is found that the Step “reviewing previous research” is not just limited toMove 1 but also found in other moves. Sometime it is even embedded in other steps to helpperform those steps’ particular purposes. Another interesting finding is that when reviewingprevious researches, Chinese scholars tend to just introduce the findings of previousresearches, and in most cases, do not give their own comments, especially negativecomments.
Thirdly, based on the analysis we conclude the generic structure of the English research articleintroductions written by Chinese scholars. The generic structure includes three moves andthirteen steps, of which five steps are used stably or obligatorily. All the three moves areconsistent with those included in Swales’ (1990) CARS model. And ten of the thirteen stepscan be found in Swales’ (1990) CARS model. This suggests that in general, the genericstructure of English RA introductions written by Chinese scholars conforms to Swales’ (1990)CARS model. However, the fit between Swales’ (1990) CARS model and the present corpusis only partial. Compared with Swales’ (1990) CARS model, the generic structure of theEnglish RA introductions written by Chinese scholars contains fewer rhetorical steps, exceptMove 1 contains three steps as outlined by swales and in Move 2 and Move 3 there is onlyone step respectively found to be used stably.
