The findings in the study shows that the textual organization of English RA introductionswritten by Chinese scholars conforms to the rhetorical schema of Swales’ (1990) CARSmodel, though there are some differences on the move structure and the employment of thesteps. This result proves once again that Swales’ CARS model for introduction is a useful andvalid approach to analyze RAs and “can be considered one of the strongest descriptions oftext structure to date” (Anthony 39). At the same time, we find that while generally conformto Swales’ CARS model, Chinese scholars have some distinctive features in their English RAintroduction writings. For instance, there are the cycles of Move 1 and Move 2 on the movestructures of their English RA introductions. And on the employment of steps, Chinesescholars tend to use fewer strategies and prefer non-threatening strategies not tostraightforward techniques. Although there are variations and distinctive features in EnglishRA introduction writings, Chinese scholars generally conform to the conventions of EnglishRA introductions written by native speakers and these variations and distinctive features canbe accepted by the scientific community.
