Chapter Two Literature review and theoretical framework
2.1 Introduction of the Language Transfer
Transfer is a psychological term, which refers to the influence of previous learning onsubsequent learning. Transfer can also mean "the carry-over or generalization of learnedresponses from one type of situation to another", especially "the application in one field ofstudy or effort of knowledge, skill, power, or ability acquired in another" (Webster's Third NewWorld International Dictionary, 1986). The use of "transfer" in "linguistic transfer" is such anexample. Linguistic transfer means what the learners carry over to or generalize in theirknowledge about their native language to help them learn to use a target language. SharwoodSmith and Kellerman argued that a super ordinate term that is theory-neutral is needed andsuggested crosslinguistic influence. They comment "the term crosslinguistic influence istheory-neutral, allowing one to subsume under one heading such phenomena as `transfer',`interference', `avoidance', `borrowing' and L2-related aspects of language loss and thuspermitting discussion of the similarities and differences between thosephenomena.”(Elks, 1999a: 301) Kellerman (1987) intended to make a precise definition oftransfer and suggested that the term be restricted to those processes that lead to theincorporation of elements from one language into another. His definition is a narrow sense ofthe term and not widely accepted. Anyway, the term `transfer' has persisted and broadened itsdefinition to include most of the crosslinguistic phenomena suggested by Sharwood Smith andKellerman. Faerch and Kasper define transfer as "the process by which Language 2 learnersactivate Languagel knowledge in developing or using their interlanguage, and point out that theprocess may either support (positive transfer) or detract (negative transfer) fromlearning."(O'Malley and Chamot, 2001:148)O'Malley and Chamot (2001:233) define transfer as "the use of previous linguistic or priorskills to assist comprehension or production." From their definition we can see that L1knowledge and transfer are regarded helpful to better understand a foreign language and the L1plays more of a positi本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
