Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background

However, most of the Chinese learnersare learning English as their second language. What is more, most of the English learners do notaim to replace Chinese with English. Therefore, the process of learning English for them is theprocess of the second language acquisition. Middle school students have not learned muchEnglish but they have much knowledge about Chinese and hence they have already owned theirown understanding towards the methods and strategies for learning English. Therefore, it isimpossible for them to completely forget Chinese during the process of learning English.Therefore, the role of Chinese in learning English can not be ignored. However, whichinfluences of Chinese on English learning are positive and are able to prompt the learning ofEnglish? Which influence of Chinese on English learning are negative and are able to restrictthe learning of English? What factors can restrict the language transfer of Chinese to English?How do the teachers and students prompt the positive transfer of Chinese and avoid thenegative transfer of English?Although there are some differences between Chinese and English, there are still somethings in common between Chinese and English. Especially in Chinese grammar and Englishgrammar, Chinese and English have many common rules. These common characteristics in themeans of language and the psychological perceptions can prompt the learning of English. Forthe differences between English grammar and Chinese grammar, English teachers and middleschool students can adjust the learning psychology to avoid the interference of Chinese on thelearning of English.

Therefore, they lack of the opportunity to take advantage of English to carry out thecommunication because they regard English as a foreign language. The English learning cannot do without learning of the foreign knowledge which includes the English grammar. Englishgrammar is the framework of English and it supports each aspects of English learning such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. The middle school students have to understand certainrules of English grammar in order to learn English well. There are different kinds of meanswhich can be used to teach English grammar.
