2.2 Limitations of Previous Studies
Study  of  Grammatical  Metaphor  can  be  traced  back  to  the  study  of  metaphor. Aristotle can be regarded as the first person to study metaphor. In 1980s Lakoff and Johnson  began  to  study  metaphor  in  the  perspective  of  cognitive  metaphor.  The study of metaphor as a linguistic theory firstly put forward by Halliday. In 1985 the publication  of  An  Introduction  to  Functional  Grammar  marked  the  beginning  of conscious study of metaphor. After him, many scholars are attempting to explore this theory  deeply.  Martin  is  one  of  important  figures  who  give  a  detailed  interpretation of this theory. He is not satisfied with what the original classification is and he tries to  reclassify  Grammatical  Metaphor.  Based  on  three  metafunction  of  language, Martin  (1992,  1993)  puts  forward  the  concept  of  textual  Grammatical  Metaphor. Besides  Martin,  Thompson  also  makes  great  contribution  to  the  development  of Grammatical Metaphor theory. He (1996) thinks that there are two ways of realizing textual  Grammatical  Metaphor,  which  are  thematic  equative  and  predicated  theme. And  he  also  talks  about  the  creation  of  Grammatical  Metaphor,  especially  the function  of  conceptual  metaphor.  All  of  them  make  great  efforts  to  ensure Grammatical Metaphor theory more complete.
