reporting.
It is a malpractice among some reporting to use fuzzy terms as weasel words when they fail to report certain events in time. To hoodwink the audience they often use such fuzzy terms as “recently”, “last week”, “several days ago” and “then” which could have been replaced by more precise terms. At times, when they fail to obtain the precise figures, names, etc., they also resort to fuzzy terms. All these are undesirable and should be guarded against.
Example:
On a recent morning, some campuses in Chengdu, capital city of Southwest China’ s Sichuan Province, had classroom populated almost exclusively by male students.
China Daily, Apr. 2. 2004
In the above news story, the time indicator is recent. In fact, more precise time element is both possible and necessary. We cannot help suspecting that the first item is merely a belated translation of a news report from a certain Chinese newspaper. The use of “recent” here must be an attempt of the writer to glass over the delay of the reporting.
The word “recent” is too fuzzy for a daily newspaper, because it could mean “two days ago”, or “two weeks ago”, or even “two months ago”. On reading this piece of news story, the reader cannot help feeling doubtful about the timeliness of the reporting.
To sum up, the proper attitude we should towards fuzziness in news reporting is to use it appropriately to the best advantage and to guard against it abuse. People must be cautious of the essential distinctions between use of fuzzy language and fake news.
Fuzzy language is the best way for newsmen to use when they cannot achieve the maximal precision. While fake news is concocted by a special person to act as a means to achieve his particular purpose.
Fuzzy language doesn’t reflect a fake fact, but a fuzzy representation of a fact.
Fuzzy language doesn’t separate itself from the truth completely, so it cannot produce negative effect on society, while fake news not only violates news principle of truthfulness but also harms the public.
