in news reporting and it produces the following pragmatic functions: conforming to the basic criteria of news reporting, strengthening the credibility of news reporting, raising acceptability to readers, enhancing self-protecting of the reporters, avoiding speaking in an absolute way and achieving politeness. All these functions may be of great practical significance in news reporting concerning a variety of fields.
　　　It is apparent that this study of fuzziness in news has raised more questions than it has been able to propose answers to. This thesis is only a preliminary attempt. Limited by time and research competence, this thesis has not reached the point of satisfaction in many aspects. For example, when and how the exact words and fuzzy words should be appropriately used in news reporting is an untouched case. If not bound to actual application, concrete context and human beings’ cognition, the linguistic signs like “exact” or “fuzzy” are insignificant when they stand alone.
　　　To sum up, fuzziness is a broad and fruitful area of language study, especially in news reporting, in which there is considerable potential for further research. This thesis, then, is just meant a step in this direction.
