, if wewant to analyze the neologisms just on the surface word-formation, we will not findsome remarkable distinction between them. Though in the recent years, manylinguists have made substantial contribution from the perspective of cognitivelinguistics in language study, and it is ubiquitous to find most of them deepen intothis language phenomenon by applying concept blending theory, ICM (IdealizedCognitive Model), or metaphor. What's more, there are still few scholars doing theresearch in a comparative way to analyze the neologisms of political news. Therefore, the writer in this paper would try to apply the cognitive metonymy theoryaccompanied with conceptual metaphor theory into them so as to explore and give afull explanation on the novel word creation and formation along with some otherrelevant matters of neologisms both in English and Chinese. Only through this way, might we have a better understanding of these two different languages as well astheir culture. The significance of this study lies mainly in two points, from the perspective ofthe theoretical one and the practical one. As to its theoretical significance, just asprofessor Hu (2006) said, there are two typical ways of meaning shifting, one is thebroadening of the meaning and the other one is the narrowing of the meaning. Fromthe cognitive perspective, it is closely related to the one concept substituting for theother not only in the expansion of meaning but also in the narrowing of the meaning, therefore, the semantic changing is based on the cognitive mechanism(Zhang Hui,Lu Weizhong, 2010). Vocabulary is increasing constantly as time goes by. It has beenestimated that about 600 Chinese neologisms appeared annually in the 1980s, and300 to 400 per year in the 1990s (Zhang Jian, 2001). And in the latest past years, thousands of neologisms in every aspects of life have come into the Chinese andEnglish vocabulary, as a result, to offer a new vision and seek for better solutions todeal with this language phenomena ranks as the first place in vocabulary learningand teaching, what's more, we will find the formation of neologisms in English andChinese neologisms are more or less likely through a metaphorical or metonymicalway, and we can hardly separate the metaphor and metonymy. Therefore,it mightoffer us a new vision to study the neologism in these two strikingly differentlanguages so as to arouse a better understanding of the cognitive thinking of humanbeings. As a result, this
thesis may shed some light on the enrichment of theunderstanding of the relationship between language and cognition. In the future, withthe help of abundant resources, it is hoped that this study could dig deeper andenable the argument to be fully developed. The study of this topic might gain much benefit for the language learning andteaching. We can briefly classify its practical significance into three points; Firstly, the neologisms of political news are quite new and closely related to our daily lifewhile it is difficult for us to master. With the boom of the information age and theaccelerating pace of globalization, the role the neologism plays in political news isbecoming more and more important in our current society, especially in the field oforal interpretation and translation, as a result, that the author in this paper emphasizeto find the internal word-formation of the neologism in this area may offertranslators some suggestion to go well on with their future work; secondly, thisresearch might give some
