1.1 A Brief Review of Metaphor Study
Traditionally, metaphor was referred only as a pervasive element in the rhetoricand regarded as mainly decorative and ornamental in nature. Studies of metaphor havebeen largely focused on issues such as meaning, form, the role of metaphor it plays,etc. These studies do not pay attention to the exploration of the connection ofmetaphors as mental or picturesque representations of the real world and the languageutilized to realize the pictures in words. Despite the great amount of materials of thislinguistic phenomenon, very little research has been done on cognitive metaphortranslation.

With the further development of metaphor study, scholars start to noticethe influence metaphor has on people’s thinking mode, the way people use language,as well as the cognitive function of metaphor. Especially in the 1970s and 1980s,cognitive linguistics started to bloom like bamboo shoots after rain and graduallybecame the mainstream in the field of metaphor study. During this period, manywell-known scholars such as Lakoff and Johnson, Fillmore, Langacker, etc. proposedtheir own theories about metaphor, contributing a lot to metaphor theory study. Inrecent years, cognitive linguistic theories such as the cognitive grammar approach,conceptual metaphor theory and the mental space theory have provided newperspectives of observing the process of meaning construction. And these theories, inturn, have inspired new researches to the interpretation of various kinds of texts,which not only rely on language forms in poetics and stylistics, but also offer newperspectives on how language forms are indicative of underlying cognitive processand structure. The conceptual integration theory, also known as the conceptualblending theory, which is proposed by Fauconnier and Turner as another addition tothe list of cognitive theories, is further development of mental space theory that playsa significant role in showing the inadequacies of some abstract and disembodiedviews dominating structuralism, generative linguistics, etc.

The key notion of the conceptual integration theory is elaborated by Fauconnierin Mapping in Thought and Language (Fauconnier, 1997). In the book, Fauconnierunfolds his four-space model of the theory by which he claims that the onlinemeaning of the natural languages can be constructed. During the following couple ofyears, Fauconnier makes constant efforts to optimize the conceptual integration theory.In the study of cognitive semantics, Fauconnier and Turner state that projectiontypically involves conceptual integration. They propose the basis for such a theoryand argue that conceptual integration is a basic cognitive operation which operatesuniformly at different levels of abstraction and under superficially divergentcontextual environments. In the year of 2002, the appearance of the book The Way WeThink by Fauconnier and Turner can be regarded as a landmark in this field. In thebook, Fauconnier and Turner, on the basis of their previous works, further point outthat conceptual integration is a basic psychological cognitive mechanism, which goesthrough nearly all cognitive activities.
