Sometimes, people may find it not so easy to comprehend whatis covered in sports news，not to mention when the news is written in English. We cansee, after careM research and study, sports news headlines itself has some specialfeatures of its own.Through quantitative and qualitative research methods, the thesis is intended toanalyze the characteristics of English sports news headlines, and tries to study thetranslation of English sports news headlines from the perspective of Newmark'scommunication translation (CT) and semantic translation (ST). The purpose is that,the English-learning readers may have a general idea of how English sports news iswritten, and learn how to comprehend it through analyzing English sports newsheadline and its translation. Most importantly, the purpose is to enjoy the entertainingsports news and keep abreast with the hot news around the world. Besides, throughthe study of the translation of English sports news headline, we can give somesuggestions and advice to the sports news headline translators; thus we hope thisthesis can help improving the standard of sports news headline translation.‘The significance of the present study lies in three aspects. Firstly, the presentstudy develops the study on sports news headline by applying the theory of stylisticsthrough comparative studies between English sports news headline and Chinese sportsnews headline. Secondly, the exploration of characteristics of sports news headlinewill hopefully provide some suggestions for its translation. Thirdly, the present thesisenriches the application of the theory of CT and ST by providing a new perspective tostudy the language features of sports news headlines and its translation tactics.

1.3 Organization of the Thesis论文结构
The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One introduces the background,purpose and significance, and overview of the thesis. Chapter Two is the literaturereview, includes three parts: definition of news headline, news language and sportsnews headline research. Chapter Three lays down the core theoretical foundation ofthis thesis by means of conducting in-depth researches into communicative translationand semantic translation，text typology and their relations. Chapter Four analyze thecharacteristics of the English sports news headline in three fields: lexical, grammatical,and rhetorical features. The author also describes the differences between English andChinese sports news headlines. Chapter Five is the theory implication to sports newsheadlines translation，including analyzing the text type of sports news headline andthe translation tactics. The last part of the thesis is a conclusion, which points out theimplications and limitations of the thesis.
