Chapter Five Transitivity Analysis of News Reports

5.1. Statistic Result
According to the concrete introduction of transitivity system and the six processtypes of it in chapter four, the two selected news reports could be analyzed.In the news report from the renowned American media CNN, there exist 29paragraphs. Through transitivity analysis, a total number of 149 processes could befound，including 51 material processes，16 mental processes, 22 relational processes, 57verbal processes and 3 existential processes. And then，the six types of process would bedisplayed respectively in a detailed way.The following table，namely. Table 5.1, displays all the 51 material processes in thenews report selected from CNN according to their order of appearance in the discourse: While in the news report from the famous Chinese media China Daily, there exist31 paragraphs. Through transitivity analysis, a total number of 115 processes could befound, including 41 material processes, 7 mental processes, 24 relational processes, 37verbal processes and 6 existential processes.

Conclusion

This thesis has made an analysis of the English news-reporting discourse on thesame event from American and Chinese news media with transitivity system as theresearch instrument，presenting and discussing the similarities and differences in thelanguage use of the news discourses. Furthermore, the realization of process types intransitivity system is revealed.Through the analysis, we can found that there are five process types in both thetwo news reports: material process，verbal process, relational process，mental processand existential process. And material process, verbal process，relational process are thethree main process types in the news discourses.
